The many green reasons why it makes sense to fall back in love with the milkman

Imagine if there was an eco-friendly way to get a daily pint. Oh wait – it already exists.

Remember the whirr of an electric motor, the clink-clink of the bottles rattling in a crate? Doorstep pinta deliveries have crashed since the Seventies, but the Government’s war against single-use plastics has indirectly sparked the revival of the humble milk float.

Forty years ago, 94 per cent of milk in the UK was brought to our doorstep by a nationwide army of delivery men and women. Back then, the now-defunct Milk Marketing Board was in charge of production and distribution across the UK.

Milk was money and the board devised a range of advertising campaigns to keep delivery numbers up. “Drinka pinta milka day” and “Full of natural goodness” were popular slogans, while “Is your man getting enough?” likely caused Mary Whitehouse to choke on her cornflakes....

The British milkman was once as common a sight on our streets as much as the Sainsbury’sOcado or Tesco truck delivering online orders are today.

In the 1970s and ’80s, more than 90 per cent of milk sales were from bottles delivered by the roundsperson direct to the doorstep - but a generation on and that figure had plummeted to just 3 per cent.

The reason for such a dramatic drop-off was largely due to the rise of the supermarket, which sells milk far cheaper than anywhere else, so cheap that it has impacted negatively on the farmers who milked it in the first place.

But over the last few years something completely unexpected has happened: doorstep milk delivery is enjoying a return.

With our collective awareness of the horrors of plastic on the environment, the more people want their milk in bottles again. We are prepared to pay a little more for it, too, if it helps save the planet.

Environmental appeal

One large milk delivery company has gained 20,000 new customers in a four-week period alone, and more than 75,000 people have signed up to its reusable-based scheme in the past year.

A survey conducted by them suggests that recycling is increasingly a priority for all of us, and glass milk bottles – which can be reused an average of 25 times – make a lot of sense.

The more that supermarkets delay in the uptake of recyclable packaging, the more people are prepared to boycott them.

As many as 14 per cent of UK residents say they have done just that, while 26 per cent insist they will no longer buy food sold in plastic trays and unnecessary packaging.

More than just milk

Daily milk deliveries no longer comprise just milk alone, but also eggs, cheese, breakfast cereal, yoghurt and any number of savoury snacks. Some local milk delivery services also deliver meat, fruit and vegetables.

Sourdough bread is popular, likewise the increasing variety of non-dairy milk.

A familiar sight

The revival doorstep milk deliveries is not exclusively down to environmental issues, however. A large part of the appeal appears to be nostalgia.

Milk in a bottle, with a silver foil top for semi-skimmed, gaudy gold for full fat, these are pleasures many of us remember from our childhoods.

One woman who chose to get milk delivered admitted that, yes, it was more a little more expensive than supermarket-bought equivalents, “but I feel like it’s worth it. It reminds me of my childhood. We even put a note in the bottles last week to tell the milkman we were off on holiday, so not to deliver, The milk-person becomes a friendly face”

There has also been suggestion that employing the services of a milkman, or woman, enhances a sense of community, which has become increasingly important of late in our socially disconnected world.

The most common description of the milkman’s role is “the eyes and ears of the community”.

They’ve helped customers by changing light bulbs, collecting pensions, resoling shoes, unblocking sinks, feeding cats, unscrewing bottle tops, changing tyres, fetching kittens out of trees, catching burglars and using their milk floats to help their customers move house.

A modern revival

There have been necessary modern-day advances too, the 21st century customer is a different person to the 1980s counterpart. You can order – and pay – online these days.

It has also been suggested that another likely reason for the revival is that certain neighbourhoods contain “retro-fetishists”. “The hipsters love the glass bottles and the electric floats.”

The long-term future of “milkies” may remain unknown for the time being – many of us still buy our pints and our litres along with our weekly shop in supermarkets – but, as the rounds-person delivers more and more variety, usually of better, fresher quality, people are beginning to realise the advantages of the milk deliveries.
